Carlisle - Waggoner's Gap HawkWatch

Written by Monday, May 21, 2012 • 2:29 am
Carlisle, Cumberland County

In the early twentieth-century, many birds of prey were being exterminated as vermin. Pennsylvania's Hawk Mountain became the center of a movement to protect America's raptors, and sites were established throughout the state as lookouts to view and monitor the hawk population. Waggoner's Gap quickly became the most popular lookout in the midstate area, and is still a great place for nature lovers and birders to view Pennsylvania's wildlife. Waggoner's Gap is located on the spine of Blue Mountain, just outside of Carlisle. The Audubon Society has established a HawkWatch lookout ideal for spotting birds from both sides of the mountain. Be on the lookout for hawks, kestrels, bald eagles and peregrine falcons, and consider doing an official count for the HawkWatch records.
